Hawaiian Luau Cake

I was fortunate enough to be asked make a big cake for a luau birthday party!  When my friend Tiffany asked about a cake that would serve 40 or so, I suggested a stacked cake instead of a sheet cake.  She was on board with that idea and let me decide the design...

I started with a 10" base cake and did a light crumb coat on it, and then piped a grass skirt down the sides.  Actually, I piped it up the sides, to ensure a uniform length around the base.

For the top layer, I created a little beach scene with brown sugar sand, a towel, flip flops, waves, and an umbrella.  I used disco dust on top of the water.

And a fondant lei wrapped around the base of the top layer.

I was so excited to be able to make a stacked cake and try some new things with the design.  I hope Tiffany and her lovely daughter Trinity had a fantastic luau!

Monsters, Inc First Birthday Cake

This was a really special cake for me to make, because just over one year ago I sold my first cake to my friend Joan, for her daughter's baby shower...now here we are celebrating that little guy's first birthday!

Shannon has always used a Little Monster theme for him, and you can view the shower cake here:   http://pinknteal.blogspot.com/2013/02/monster-baby-shower-cake.html

I love Shannon's idea of making the smash cake a mini Mike Wazowski!  How adorable.
